Review: “Gnomeo and Juliet” (2011)

WARNING - Spoiler Alert

‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ is one of the computer-animated family comedy film works from Walt Disney. This film based on William Shakespeare's play ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Released date was on February, 2011.

The picture is as beautiful as expected from the Shrek’s making team and colors are suited for kid’s movie, even details are done so well enough to cause the feeling of real ceramic dolls.

Even if the main plot is almost the same to the original ‘Romeo and Juliet’ play, the way this movie moves makes difference, most in a comedy and adventure style. Watchers can easily sense some cliché points along the story, but by cute and humorous characters the story is not boring at all.

This film surely has many jokes which appear in timing. The tuning point to become, what we can predictably know but still mentally support along the story, happy ending.

Somehow this film seems like the adventure of Sinbad (or something in relate) with the theme of two families against each other. LOL

With the over-gnome power, Gnomeo (and the others) can fight and spin in the air like a stuntman from action movie. Anyway, the logic of being ‘the ceramic doll’ is still hold the important role, which I think the producers wisely are used it to make the movie became more exciting.

Featherstone, the plastic flamingo, is the one of many sub-characters who makes the story went smoothly. (I like him the most, how tragedy his life was!)

Story-line is well placed (the story move chronologically. Anyway, the plot is still easy to predict, same as any others children rated movie from Walt Disney). Events in the first part of the story are related to the other part, such as lawnmowers race. I love the idea of using the lawnmower as a car, and soon as the destroyer for the peak of the story.

Anyway, I think that the first part of the movie is kind of boring, even though the movie is included with some action scenes (which also showed in the trailers). Soundtracks which was using in the beginning are somehow prosaic. On the other hand, the following part of the movie is quite fun. Maybe because the plot that was changed from the original, and the continuity that is exciting.

So... I would rate this film with 3 ½ out of 5. ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ is entertaining than what I expected from the first place.
